Located in the heart of Essex, Connecticut, The Griswold Inn is more than just a restaurant—it’s a historic American landmark that beautifully captures the essence of New England’s maritime heritage. Established in the 1700s, this cherished inn seamlessly blends rustic colonial charm with vibrant, contemporary American fare, making it an essential destination for travelers and locals alike.
As a restaurant, bar, and hotel, The Griswold Inn offers a rich culinary experience that celebrates both tradition and innovation. The menu is a thoughtful curation of classic American dishes elevated with fresh, seasonal ingredients. Guests can indulge in signature offerings such as the perfectly crisped Fish N’ Chips, hearty and tender Signature 12 Oz Prime Rib of Beef, and the comforting warmth of their Signature Clam Chowder. Their Trio of Potato Cakes and Warm House Chips with Gorgonzola are delightful starters that tease the palate with bold, satisfying flavors.
The Griswold’s dinner selections maintain this high standard with seasonal starters like the Crispy Cheese Curds paired with a spicy Fresno chili aioli and the delicately fried Crab Fritters drizzled with charred lemon aioli that perfectly balance sweet and savory notes. Entrées such as the Grilled Shrimp Niçoise and the Buttermilk Fried Statler Chicken Breast spotlight fresh ingredients and complex layers of flavor, accented by thoughtfully composed sides like curried cauliflower and braised fennel.
A particular highlight is the Griswold’s takeout "Gris-To-Go" menu, featuring refined dishes like the Faroe Island Salmon with toasted orzo and saffron beurre blanc and the rich, succulent Boneless Short Ribs served over whipped potato – comfort food thoughtfully redefined for at-home enjoyment.
The ambiance of The Griswold Inn is timeless yet inviting. Warm wood paneling, historic American relics, and a cozy fireplace set the scene for memorable dinners or casual drinks in the bar. This isn’t a stuffy colonial museum; it’s a lively gathering place where locals and visitors share stories over expertly crafted cocktails and house-made ginger beer. The spirited atmosphere often bursts into sea shanties, echoing the inn’s long maritime history and infusing the space with genuine New England character.
Customer reviews vividly bring this experience to life. “The Griswold Inn will welcome you with open arms and some sea shanties,” says L B, capturing the warm hospitality and authentic vibes. Daylan Nilsen praises it as a “quintessential inn/tavern” with traditional homemade fare “just made right,” while Todd Fellerman highlights the cozy, festive atmosphere, especially when seated by the fireplace, making it a “classic Northeastern treat.” Even with some noted service hiccups, like those shared by Rosa Tilley, the inn’s magical appeal and quality cuisine remain undeniable.
Whether you’re savoring a leisurely Sunday brunch, enjoying a round of craft cocktails in the bar, or staying overnight in one of its historic rooms, The Griswold Inn offers a genuinely immersive New England experience. It stands as a testament to enduring tradition, exceptional food, and heartfelt hospitality—all served with a side of maritime charm that’s uniquely its own.
An amazing spot! Food and ambiance was amazing! Unfortunately our service was most lacking! Drinks were served at nearly the end of our meal. This was after we reminded the staff we had asked for it. It was a week day and there were plenty of staff to be attentive. Disappointing for such a magical venue.
If you are looking for the ultimate New England experience, The Griswold Inn will welcome you with open arms and some sea shanties. Built in the 1700s, it has maintained the charm and character of a bygone age, but the bar and dining areas are lively - nothing stodgy here!
Beautiful quintessential inn/tavern! My wife and I didn’t stay at the inn but we did eat at the tavern and the food and vibe was amazing. Traditional homemade American fare just made right! & the decor was great showing old American relics. The Pilgrim sandwich was a seasonal offering and it was perfect. The homemade chips appetizer with cheese dip was awesome as well. I would totally come back!
We enjoyed the fabulous Thanksgiving buffet!! All of the food was delicious and the atmosphere was was perfect!!! The one drawback was the food was not warm enough could have been hotter. We were seated in the Tap Room and next time we would request the main dining room
Truly a classic and cosy Inn that is a classic Northeastern treat! LOVED it "the Gris" and definitely excited to come back many times. The festive and warm vibes were there (we sat by the fireplace), along with excellent drinks and food. Both the bar and dining areas are great. Most go if you're in the Essex area.
We had potato pancakes which were hot and very tasty. I had the steak Ceasars salad and my daughter had Cobb salad. They were both very good. Had a nice seat in the main dining room near the fireplace. I have been here many times and it is always good. Just the ambiance alone with all the pictures of boats, etc is worth the visit.
